Haunted by nightmares, a young Kakashi digs into the origins of Kinoe's Wood Release, uncovering Konoha's grim experiments with Hashirama's kekkei genkai while foiling a plot by Danzō against the Third Hokage. This 351st Shippuden episode belongs to Kakashi's Anbu arc.
Still tormented by nightmares and growing more withdrawn, Kakashi seeks to understand Kinoe's abilities and breaks into the Hokage Residence, where Hiruzen catches him. The Third shares part of Hashirama Senju's history along with the village's early attempts to preserve the Wood Release kekkei genkai, and the mysterious disappearances that followed those experiments.
Elsewhere, Danzō schemes to have Hiruzen assassinated during his journey to the Fire Daimyō, but Kakashi warns the Hokage and derails the plot. In a brief standoff, Kakashi frees Kinoe, telling him his talents will one day serve the village. Reporting back to Hiruzen, Kakashi accepts a place in the Anbu under the Third's direct command and informs him that Kinoe exists. Genma, Raidō, Asuma, Kurenai and Guy talk over the fresh round of changes, and though they grieve that Minato is gone, they still hope for the best for Hiruzen and the village's future.
In a shot of fallen Uchiha and Senju clan members, one downed Uchiha strongly resembles Sasuke in both hair and clothing. The episode adapts chapters 624 and 648, aired in Japan on February 20, 2014, and in English on October 4, 2016, and uses the opening Size of the Moon with the ending Rainbow.
