The New Chūnin Exams

As Sakura pours every ounce of her medical skill into stabilising a gravely injured Naruto, the story shifts to Tsunade recalling an earlier tournament, one where a young generation of shinobi restored a sense of hope to those watching. Moved to act, the Fifth Hokage opens negotiations with Gaara about staging a fresh round of the exams.

The real intent behind the proposal is to draw the Akatsuki out of hiding. Gaara offers to have his own village host part of the tournament, reasoning that it could also flush out the conspirators plotting to unseat him. The two leaders settle on a split format, with the opening stage held in Konohagakure and the second staged in Sunagakure.

Tsunade sends her Anbu to hand-deliver invitations to the surrounding nations, each note intended as a lure. Kankurō and Temari remain uneasy about her true aims until she spells out the plan. The reception across the other villages proves uniformly cold. In Kumogakure, A reacts with fury and wants the matter kept from B, who has already learned of it through Darui. Mei declines after consulting her senior advisor, and Ōnoki refuses as well, reading the gesture as a possible prelude to war.

With every nation turning the offer down, the invitations fail to provoke the response Tsunade wanted. In a separate thread, Kakashi journeys toward Amegakure for a planned face-to-face with Hanzō.

The installment sits within the In Naruto's Footsteps: The Friends' Paths arc. As happens in several other episodes, the Kazekage's robes are rendered in blue rather than their intended green.
