Gameplay

Fighters move freely across a 2D plane rather than being locked to a strict side on stance, dodging stage hazards and open pits while trading jutsu, shuriken, and kunai. Each combatant can call in a support character mid battle, adding a layer beyond the core one on one exchange.

Story Mode

An arcade style story mode splits into twelve character specific campaigns that loosely retell manga events from the Introduction arc through the Invasion of Konoha, occasionally departing from canon for the sake of pacing. The Japanese release ships with twelve playable characters; the North American and European versions add Nine Tailed Naruto and Curse Mark Sasuke as bonus fighters, though both lose their transformation abilities in the process.
