Boruto Uzumaki!!

Standing on the ruined face of Naruto's carving atop the Hokage Rock, Boruto confronts Kawaki above a shattered village where Kawaki announces that the age of shinobi has ended. Boruto refastens his cracked forehead protector, awakens his Jogan, insists he is still a ninja, and rushes his opponent. The narrative then reaches back to a time when he bristled at the shinobi life and above all at his father, convinced that the duties of Hokage kept Naruto from his family, beginning with a squad mission to subdue a bear.

During their report, Katasuke asks Naruto to permit the Kote in the coming Chunin Exams and is refused, though he later slips Boruto cheat codes for a video game and nudges him toward the exams to impress his father. Moegi delivers exam papers, and only their mothers' letters convince Shikadai and Inojin to enter. Sarada and Mitsuki recruit Boruto for the three-person team, unaware that his real motive is proving himself to Naruto. Himawari's birthday celebration sours when Naruto's shadow clone disperses and drops the cake, infuriating Boruto despite Hinata's defense. When the bell rings it is Sasuke, not Naruto, arriving to deliver a scroll from Kaguya's castle. Boruto swings at Sasuke, is brushed off effortlessly, and asks to become his student.

Most of the chapter retells the early stretch of Boruto: Naruto the Movie, following the film's novelization, though many characters wear outfits different from those in the film. It is chapter 1, collected in volume 1 under the Versus Momoshiki arc, and ran in Japan in 2016 as issue 23, dated May 23.
