Anko is struck by Gaara's showing in the second phase: he wrapped it up in a mere ninety-seven minutes and emerged without so much as a smudge of dirt, a result she considers all but unreachable for even seasoned shinobi. The story then rewinds ten hours to Team 8, who had already secured their second scroll and were making for the phase's finish point. On the way they stumbled onto Team Shigure squaring off against the three siblings from the Sand. Unsure whether the other group even carried the scroll they lacked, Shigure lunged at Gaara anyway, only for the boy's automatic sand barrier to turn the blow aside without a scratch.

Anko highlights Gaara's spotless, record-fast completion of the survival phase. A flashback follows Team 8 as they head toward the tower with their pair of scrolls. They observe Team Shigure attacking the Sand Siblings, and Shigure's strike against Gaara is deflected harmlessly by his Shield of Sand.
