Summary
Asuma and Kurenai step forward to challenge the two hooded figures, who drop their disguises and identify themselves as Itachi Uchiha and Kisame Hoshigaki. Understanding at once how deadly the pair are, the two jonin ready themselves for combat. Asuma parries a swing of Kisame's blade with his knuckle weapons while Kurenai sets up an illusion aimed at both intruders.
Kisame gains the upper hand and opens a gash across Asuma's shoulder, while Itachi turns Kurenai's genjutsu back against her with ease. He lunges at her the moment she is ensnared, and she shatters the trance barely in time to slip away from a killing blow. Asuma manages to dodge Kisame's follow-up attacks and lands a chakra-charged cut to his face. As the exchange grows fiercer, Kakashi appears to reinforce his comrades, apologising for stepping in but admitting he had a bad feeling about who they might be facing.
