Summary
Shikamaru grasps that his reserves are far too low to keep eight Otogakure fighters pinned in place. Worse, he notices he has lost track of one member and reasons that this ninth enemy has been hanging back on purpose, wary of an ambush. To test the idea, he lashes out at the eight, and sure enough the hidden ninth steps in to shield them.
Key Events
Knowing where the last one hides does Shikamaru little good, since he has no strength left to seize him as well. Resigned to dying, he holds on until his grip over the eight finally slips. The moment they break loose, Asuma arrives with the ninth already captured and cuts down the rest, praising his student for lasting as long as he did. In a separate scene, Orochimaru strips the reanimated First and Second Hokage of their free will, ensuring their memories will not interfere as he turns them against Sarutobi.
