The Chūnin Exams Begin!! (chapter)

Gaara, Kankuro, and Team Shinki ride the train toward Konoha for the Chunin Exams, with Shinki certain the three of them will triumph and dismissing their rivals, as Gaara advises them to rest. Elsewhere, Metal Lee drills in his room, and Sasuke coaches Boruto in shurikenjutsu, showing how ricocheting one's own shuriken can strike a target, while Boruto thinks back on Katasuke's remarks about the Kote. Shikamaru and Sai run the opening exam, a true-or-false question about a book series, and when both responses turn out wrong, the assembled teams plunge into an ink pit; only those who keep themselves from dropping in advance.

Shikamaru relays to Naruto that Boruto's squad made it through and nudges him to offer congratulations, so Naruto sends an email that Boruto shrugs off. Bristling at Sasuke's critique of his shuriken skills, Boruto protests that this is really Sarada's forte as an Uchiha, prompting Sasuke to conjure a swarm of shadow clones, Naruto's signature move, next to Boruto's meager four. The second stage tasks teams with guarding their own flag while seizing the enemy's; the squads of Moegi, Yurui, and Shinki advance. Boruto hangs back to defend the flag as Sarada and Mitsuki push forward, then finds himself outnumbered when a Kiri triplet team turns out to wield shadow clones of their own.

Mitsuki doubles back to assist, and as the triplets close in on the flag, Boruto recalls his father's congratulatory message and reaches for the Kote, using Water Release and Lightning Release to overwhelm them. Sarada then employs her Sharingan to distinguish the genuine flag from genjutsu decoys, clinching the win for their team. Watching from the sidelines, Katasuke's subordinate Kosuke reports to him that Boruto activated the Kote and that the moment was captured on video.

Sasuke trains Boruto in shurikenjutsu ahead of the exams. The first stage's trick question drops failing teams into an ink pit, with Boruto's team advancing. In the second stage's flag battle, Boruto secretly uses the Kote against a Kiri triplet team, and Sarada's Sharingan secures victory. Katasuke's subordinate Kosuke informs him that Boruto's use of the Kote was recorded.
