Chapter 372 reunites Jiraiya with a former pupil turned enemy. Konan's refusal to talk sends him into memory, back to three orphans he once took under his wing and the boy whose eyes changed everything.
Jiraiya presses Konan, once his student, to reveal Pain's identity. Rather than reply, she comes at him, acting on Pain's command to kill him, but he subdues and restrains her with little trouble. He admits that he had believed Konan and her companions long dead and never pictured them enrolled in Akatsuki.
When Konan asks whether he regrets having spared their lives, the question pulls Jiraiya back to the day they first met. In the wake of the Second Shinobi World War, he came upon three children orphaned by the fighting and chose to teach them to fend for themselves. Not long into his tutelage, he learned that one of the boys, Nagato, carried the Rinnegan.
Printed in late 2007, this chapter 372 belongs to Volume 41 within the Tale of Jiraiya the Gallant. It opens the backstory of Jiraiya's three students and plants the revelation of Nagato's dōjutsu that reframes Pain's origins. Viz issued it as The Weeping Land!!
