Chapter 373 revisits Jiraiya's years mentoring three war orphans in the rain. His hopes for Nagato and the legendary Rinnegan collide with the present, as the ninja he believed dead reappears wearing those same eyes under the name of Pain.
The chapter reaches back to Jiraiya's decision to mentor Nagato, Konan, and Yahiko after glimpsing the Rinnegan in the young boy's eyes, hoping the three orphans could defend themselves and protect others. Whispers that those same eyes had once belonged to the founder of the ninja world pushed him further, wanting Nagato to master such power for the good of everyone.
