Certain that no lone shinobi could have wiped out the Uchiha, Sasuke presses Itachi to name his accomplice. The answer, Madara Uchiha, opens a mystery about a supposedly long-dead founder of the Hidden Leaf.
Sasuke reasons that slaughtering the entire Uchiha clan lay beyond the reach of any single person, so he demands to know who assisted Itachi in the massacre, vowing to hunt that collaborator down once he has dealt with his brother. Doubtful that his younger sibling could ever manage such a feat, Itachi nonetheless supplies a name: Madara Uchiha.
The name unsettles Sasuke, who points out that Madara helped establish Konoha generations ago and questions how the man could possibly still draw breath. Itachi cautions him against being fooled by surface facts, reminding Sasuke that he once trusted the illusion of a devoted elder brother.
