Unsho Ishizuka was a Japanese actor and voice actor with a deep, commanding voice, remembered by Naruto viewers as the original Japanese voice of the rogue swordsman Zabuza Momochi in Studio Pierrot's anime.
Ishizuka provided the Japanese voice of Zabuza Momochi, the Demon of the Hidden Mist and one of the earliest major antagonists Team 7 confronts in the Land of Waves arc. His weighty, gravelly tone suited the exiled swordsman perfectly, lending real menace to Zabuza's battles with Kakashi and a quiet ache to his final moments alongside Haku. The performance helped set the tone for the series' recurring theme of doomed, humanized villains.
Working steadily from the mid-1980s until his death in 2018, Ishizuka specialized in older, authoritative men and in narration. He was the long-serving narrator and Professor Oak of the Pokemon anime, plus he brought Jet Black to life in Cowboy Bebop. His catalog also includes One Piece's Kizaru, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood's Van Hohenheim, and the elder version of Joseph Joestar across the JoJo's Bizarre Adventure franchise. He inherited roles such as Mr. Satan in Dragon Ball and served as the regular Japanese dub voice for Liam Neeson. He died in 2018 at the age of sixty-seven.
