Pointed of nose and narrow through the limbs, Barry cuts a wiry figure. His hair runs pale, and he favors light tones throughout: a high-collared, loose-hemmed long-sleeved top, a soft hat, striped trousers, and heeled boots that taper to a point. A necklace finishes the look.

Devotion to Ace defines him, since Barry was ready to put himself between his captain and the Whitebeard who threatened him. He carries a teasing streak too, having joined the others in mocking the clumsy prose Deuce poured into his treasured adventure diary, even though that journal meant everything to its author.

Barry signed on with the Spade Pirates and roamed alongside Ace as the young captain built his name, helping repel bounty hunters and crowding around the Marine Ensign Isuka when she slipped aboard, though she shook them off with ease. The crew later wrecked in Wano, where the starving folk of Amigasa Village tied them up and took their food; rather than retaliate, Ace asked where to find dessert, and the pirates lingered for weeks and befriended Tama. When Ace fought Jinbe to a draw, Barry warned him of the fish-man's might and then helped shield him from Edward Newgate. The defense crumbled quickly, and the whole crew was folded into the Whitebeard Pirates.

His combat tools are unusually long knives, four threaded between the fingers of each hand for eight in total, though how deftly he wields them remains unrecorded. His broader abilities are likewise unknown, since he and his crewmates fell to Newgate without much trouble.
