Deacon

Of ordinary build with tanned skin, the Deacon keeps his head bald and covers his left eye with a patch. His outfit layers a dark green leather jacket laced along the sleeves over a red vest crowded with medallions, finished by a red collar threaded with yellow loops. Black fingerless gloves, brown trousers, and black shoes round out the look.

Weathered and toughened by a life at sea, the Deacon first comes across as a grasping bully, seizing Atoll to dig up the treasure resting on the seabed below it. Underneath that hard exterior lies grief and bitterness over the home and the mother he lost, and the necklace he hunts is in truth her keepsake rather than mere plunder. Recovering it leaves him at peace. His attachment to his sunken homeland runs deep enough that he shields a flock of nearby birds from harm.

The Deacon grew up on an island that eventually slipped beneath the waves, with the stronghold of Atoll later raised over the site, and in that sinking he lost both his mother and the necklace she wore. Returning with his followers, he retook Atoll by force and dispatched his subordinates Ox and Crown to comb the seabed for hidden treasure, where they crossed paths with Buggy.

Buggy and the Deacon struck an alliance against the Straw Hat Pirates to claim the treasure the crew had stumbled upon. When Buggy tried to open fire with his Buggy Balls cannon, the Deacon halted him out of concern for the birds nearby. The Straw Hats turned on Buggy, scattered his limbs, and sent him flying, leaving the Deacon alone against them. He then noticed Nami holding a golden necklace and recognized it as his mother's keepsake. She returned it to him, but the leftover Buggy Balls detonated moments later, and as Atoll crumbled the Deacon sank into the sea clutching the necklace at last.
