Gaburi is a living Orb conjured by the Great Tree to watch over the candidates of its ordeals. Awakening with no memory in the present day, he bonds deeply with the Straw Hat Pirates and serves as the central ally of the two Unlimited Cruise games.
Stripped to his base state, Gaburi is a glossy blue jewel speckled with drifting white motes. In the first Unlimited Cruise game he takes the shape of a tiny demon with an outsized chibi-like head, his skin mostly orange with yellow across the crown, big round eyes, swirling blue brows, and a fluffy raccoon-style tail layered in orange, yellow, and purple. Jagged upward fangs jut from his jaw. His getup pairs a wide-brimmed red hat bearing a small purple demon mask and curling striped horns with oversized belted pants, banded wristbands, and golden ankle rings, plus a sheathed katana strapped to his back and a sparkling halo overhead.
The sequel reworks him into an angelic form keeping the same proportions. Here his skin runs cream with orange at the top, his tail smooths out, and his attire centers on a blue helmet open at the front with white feathered wings, golden cloth streamers, and a halo crowned by a floating pink eighth note. Once he finally becomes human at the end of his journey, he appears as a fair-skinned, blond, somewhat boyish lad in a blue puff-topped cap, a blue tee, and slim golden wristbands.
Gaburi is sincere, innocent, and childlike. Born with a working mind but no grasp of the world or his own purpose, he started out docile and curious, prone to chomping on objects and flipping upside down whenever joy or excitement struck. Simple praise delighted him, and every new experience, even the feeling of happiness itself, arrived as a revelation. That naivete left him deeply impressionable, yet he met it all with optimism, openness, and a steady wish to do what was right.
Nothing puzzled him more than human nature, especially the Straw Hats' brand of heroism despite being pirates, and he grew fearful of the darkness in people after witnessing the Great Tree's recreation of Blackbeard. Reassurance from his friends steadied him, and he gradually absorbed the idea of dreams, eventually shaping one of his own modeled on Luffy's: to become a pirate and race him for the title of Pirate King. By the close of his journey he concluded that no single being can sort humanity into good or evil, that people keep striving even when they stray, and so neither he nor the Great Tree had any right to decide their fate. He also picked up Luffy's distinct "Shishishishi" laugh and could at first only speak his own name until the language suddenly came to him on Forest Island.
The Great Tree fashioned Gaburi from an Orb roughly a thousand years ago to act as guardian and judge of the candidates competing to lead a now-vanished civilization. By studying them, he was meant to be remade into a tailored gift: a reward for the pure of heart, or an instrument of destruction for the wicked. When the Tree sank beneath the sea, Gaburi sank with it and lost all memory, only stirring awake when the Straw Hat Pirates reactivated the Tree in the present.
Across the first game he guides the crew through ordeals on Forest, Gorge, Iceberg, and Cave Islands, opening paths with his powers and converting defeated ordeal seeds into treasure while wrestling with questions of friendship and morality. When the Great Tree judged the Straw Hats impure and glimpsed his fear of Teach, it twisted him into the hostile Doom Guardian. The crew fought to free him, and Gaburi sacrificed his body to shield them from the entity's attack, reverting to an Orb. The sequel follows his restoration: the crew feeds him ordeal seeds across new islands to rebuild his strength so he can safely remerge with the Doom Guardian. After defeating the entity in its evolved Demon of Doom form, Gaburi reabsorbed it and reached an understanding with the Great Tree. As the true present for the crew, he gained a single wish, which he spent on becoming human, parting from Luffy with a fist bump to chase his own dream of the Pirate King title.

When I first decided to commit to watching One Piece seriously, I knew I was embarking on one of anime's longest and most beloved series. With over 100...

The transformation everyone knows, the follow-up question nobody would touch. Why we made a smooth R&B track about the golden glow Dragon Ball never talks about....
