Ganryu is a Longarm Tribe pirate who rode with Portgas D. Ace among the Spade Pirates. Loyal to his captain, he stood against Whitebeard before the whole crew was folded into the Whitebeard Pirates.
Built heavy and broad through the middle, Ganryu carries a thick neck atop his stocky frame. His membership in the Longarm Tribe gives his arms an extra set of joints. The hair on his crown is worked into a braid, while two oversized tails fall down either side of his head. For clothing he favors a low-cut dark shirt paired with a neckerchief, a matching coat whose sleeves are pushed back past the upper elbow, striped trousers, and short striped boots that stop at the ankle.
Devotion to Ace runs deep in Ganryu, who put himself between his captain and an Emperor without hesitation. A less flattering side shows in his sense of humor: he and most of the crew openly mocked Deuce's adventure journal, treating the cherished record as a joke despite how much it meant to its author. That teasing cost the offenders their place in the diary's pages.
Shunned elsewhere because of his race, Ganryu found a home with Ace, who weighed his character rather than his bloodline. Sailing with the growing crew, he helped fend off bounty hunters and helped surround the Marine officer Isuka when she slipped aboard, though she shook them off easily. After the ship was coated at Sabaody Archipelago, the crew also weathered a shipwreck in Wano Country, befriended Tama near Amigasa Village, and later struck at Onigashima to free captured children. When Ace and Jinbe fought to a draw, Ganryu and the others rose to shield him from Edward Newgate and were quickly overpowered, after which the entire crew joined the Whitebeard Pirates. He has not been depicted since.
