Appearance

Of ordinary build, Gill wears sunglasses, sports light brownish hair, and tops his head with a black hat banded in gold velvet. His eyewear shifts between depictions, maroon rounded lenses on the cover of Wanted! and dark square frames within the story itself. A white shirt with pale trousers and shoes completes his outfit.

Once revived as a zombie, he sported a ragged green trench coat, purple trousers, and the same black hat from his living days, though the anime swaps that hat for a white mask covering his head. The zombie form also bears two additional arms, each wrapped in bandages around the hands.

Personality

Self-assured to the point of bravado, Gill never shies from killing to protect himself and prides himself on his marksmanship, taunting would-be assassins that they were a hundred years too early to take him down. The battles of the God Valley Incident left him visibly delighted, and like most pirates he prizes treasure, leaving that island overjoyed with a heavy sack of jewels.

History

In the non-canon Wanted!, Gill's outlaw life began when self-defense forced him to kill, and the resulting bounty drew an endless stream of hunters that he was compelled to cut down. Drifting between towns to avoid trouble, he killed the bounty hunter Wild Joe, who returned as a vindictive ghost only Gill could see, a perception that fully awakened after the killing despite him having always sensed the dead without seeing them. The dead hunter let slip that law enforcement had contracted Sino Phoenix to finish the job. After Joe possessed his body and provoked a confrontation, Gill outfought Sino in the streets with a decoy tactic, dropping barrels to distract and then crush him. With the town stunned by his skill and Joe's spirit fading in defeat, Gill left and was never seen again.

At least thirty-eight years ago he had enlisted in the Rocks Pirates, a legendary crew whose members often turned on one another, which along with his later rank as a General Zombie rather than a foot soldier implies considerable strength. He carried a revolver and handled it with deadly skill, and his bounty climbed so high that the authorities reportedly withdrew it because he was too dangerous to pursue. When word reached the crew that the World Government had seized Shakuyaku to put up as a God Valley reward within the Native Hunting Competition, they set sail to win her back and loot the rest, striking a giant ship carrying King Harald along the way after Rocks spoke with him privately. On the island Gill joined the rush to rescue Shakky, fighting with pistols, and got off the island after the God Valley Incident carrying looted treasure. His Devil Fruit was the Horo Horo no Mi, of the Paramecia class, which let him conjure and command ghosts. He died at some later point, and Gecko Moria recovered and revived his body as a General Zombie, adding two bandaged arms that raised his pistol count to four. Sent with the other generals to capture the Straw Hats during the Thriller Bark Arc, he failed, and Moria eventually reclaimed his animating shadow into himself.
