Johnny is a former bounty hunter and a longtime friend of Roronoa Zoro, paired almost inseparably with Yosaku. He lends a hand to the Straw Hat Pirates through the Baratie and Arlong Park episodes before settling into a fisherman's life.
Tan-skinned and on the taller side, Johnny keeps a pair of sunglasses on at all times and carries a sword wherever he goes. His hair is cropped and black, and the kanji for sea is inked across his left cheek. His brows angle downward into a permanent scowl, holding even when he grins. His wardrobe runs to a blue hooded jacket over a purple shirt, tan trousers, boots, and a watch on the left wrist. Time and training left his arms noticeably bulkier after the timeskip.
Cheerful and easygoing in the same vein as Yosaku, Johnny tends to play the steadier and more principled half of the duo, though he can clown around with his partner. He is not especially sharp, and a head stuffed with secondhand information often leaves him badly off the mark, as with his garbled claim that Hawk-Eyes haunted the Baratie when the gossip actually concerned a drunk. A streak of pride pushes him to insist that any loss came down to the narrowest of margins. He shows genuine nerve, squaring up to Mihawk during Zoro's duel and standing his ground against the whale Dick, yet he also has his timid moments, tying Zoro up and bolting from the fish-men to save his own skin.
Johnny, Yosaku, and Zoro once hunted bounties together as a trio whose bond ran closer to brotherhood than business, the group eventually splitting on amicable terms. He and his partner treat anyone tied to Zoro with deep respect, tacking the honorific for older brother onto names, and reserving sister for Nami. As fighters the two rank low in raw strength; the Arlong Pirates brushed them aside with ease. Johnny wields one of the Nakiri Swords, a broad dadao with a red grip and a round guard that he hangs from a loop of cloth rather than a sheath.
When Luffy and Usopp accidentally shelled the islet where a sick Yosaku rested, Johnny stormed the Going Merry, then calmed once he learned Zoro had joined the crew. Nami cured Yosaku of scurvy, and in gratitude he pointed the Straw Hats toward the Baratie to recruit a cook. At Arlong Park the pair barricaded the entrance to keep villagers clear of the fighting and handed Zoro their blades so he could cut down Hatchan. Once Arlong fell they thanked the crew and went back to hunting, but repeated failures eventually nudged them into becoming fishermen of Cocoyasi Village.

When I first decided to commit to watching One Piece seriously, I knew I was embarking on one of anime's longest and most beloved series. With over 100...

The transformation everyone knows, the follow-up question nobody would touch. Why we made a smooth R&B track about the golden glow Dragon Ball never talks about....
