The Kumate Tribe is a group of cannibals living in the East Blue on Kumate Island. They appear in Buggy's cover-story serial, where they capture and nearly devour his crew.
Every tribe member is human, yet those shown all share an oddly matching nose in the same shape and shade. They keep a uniform hairstyle as well, shaving most of the scalp and binding the rest into a long antenna-like tail at the crown while leaving a tuft at the back. Their clothing is identical too: a striped shirt, ragged skirt, a grass necklace, a long scarf wound at the throat, and sandals, with the tribal emblem inked or painted onto the back of each hand.
The tribe's defining trait is its cannibalism. Their crest doubles as a clue to this nature, depicting a bear paw, the meaning of their name, while also resembling three figures crowded into a cooking pot. The mark even echoes the outline of their island home, apart from the count of toes. The group was founded on September 29th and numbers somewhere between thirty and fifty members.
The tribe overwhelmed the Buggy Pirates while the crew was temporarily led by Richie, then set about preparing to eat them. After the Kumate stumbled upon Buggy's severed limbs, Buggy reunited with his scattered body with Alvida's help, turned the tables on the cannibals, and rescued his crew.
