Appearance

Machinery on this island runs well ahead of what most of the world has managed to build, though the bulk of its residents still dwell in plain towns. The landmass itself is a vast slumbering sea turtle that stirs only once a millennium to deposit her eggs. Since the animal produces no magnetic field, a Log Pose can find no bearing on it, leaving the place all but undiscoverable. Reaching it depends on a single method, the Turtle Pose, which uses a newborn hatchling as a living compass. The town riding on the turtle's back evokes the cities of Greece, and for what it really is the island once bore the name Island Turtle.

Abilities

Guarding the territory is the Boei System, a name that simply means defense, made up of robots that rain arrows down on anyone who intrudes. Ratchet owns this mechanical force, which debuted in the seventh film. The island's title carries hidden wordplay as well, being an anagram of kame, Japanese for tortoise.

History

Ruling as feudal lord is Ratchet, a gifted scientist behind the advanced devices spread throughout the island. His aim was to make the place a staging ground for taking over the world, but the Straw Hat Pirates brought that plan to an end. The island has much in common with Zou: each is a living creature carrying a society on its back, neither gives off the magnetic waves a Log Pose or Eternal Pose detects and so both require some other tracking method, and in each case one of the Straw Hats heard the animal speak, Chopper hearing the turtle and Luffy hearing Zunesha. A tune played in the film, recounting a man called Urashima ferried by a turtle he had once saved, alludes to the legend of Urashima Taro.
