History

While carrying Ace on Baterilla, an island of the South Blue, Rouge learned of Roger's execution and was seen gazing out across the ocean. Determined to keep her son's connection to the Pirate King secret, she stretched her pregnancy to a full twenty months through willpower alone. When the boy was finally delivered, she cradled him and gave him the name Gol D. Ace, drawing on a name Roger himself had picked, before the strain of holding him so long claimed her life.

Her sacrifice let Ace pass his childhood beyond the reach of the World Government. Though he never knew her, he felt he owed his mother a debt and adopted Portgas, her surname, in tribute. She had also placed her trust in Garp, Roger's old enemy, to look after the infant, and out of respect for her love and sacrifice he honored the request without ever disclosing Ace's lineage to the Marines.
