Shu keeps the lower half of his face hidden behind a cloth veil, and a soft newsboy-style cap, possibly a turban, stands in for the usual stiff Marine headgear, letting only a few strands of hair peek out beneath it. Rather than wearing his Marine coat properly, he drapes it over his shoulders, and the garment runs noticeably thinner and shorter than regulation issue, falling only as far as his waist.

As a Marine, Shu holds a firm devotion to justice, though whether he leans toward the moral or the absolute reading of it is never made clear. The anime paints him as supremely self-assured against blade fighters, squaring off with Zoro without a flicker of fear even after watching the swordsman cut down a string of other officers.

Shu's strength flows from the Sabi Sabi no Mi, a Paramecia fruit that lets him rust any metal his skin makes contact with. During the assault on Enies Lobby he put this to devastating use, crumbling Zoro's sword Yubashiri to flakes with a single touch. The anime stretches the ability further, granting him immunity to metal weapons since they corrode the instant they reach him, and even letting him rust living tissue to seize an opponent's joints and rot their flesh. In that extended bout he locked Zoro in place, only to be dropped by Sogeking's Firebird Star.
