Shura

Shura is styled after an early-twentieth-century aviator. A wing-trimmed flight cap sits over his short, dark hair, goggles perched at the front, and a thin mustache forks into two points beneath his nose. He wears a fur-lined orange jacket whose puffy brown sleeves are broken up by pale square panels, baggy orange trousers held by a belt, and a purple scarf, with fur cuffing his gloves and boots. The small downturned wings on his back mark him, like every native of Birka, as a sky dweller.

Like the rest of the priests, Shura brims with confidence and shows no hesitation about killing anyone who breaks Enel's law. Flashes of pity surface now and then, such as the odd courtesy he extends to Chopper by addressing him by name. That same arrogance proves his undoing: he badly misjudges Wyper, assuming the warrior held a mere Impact Dial when a Reject Dial was actually in play. He shares little warmth with fellow priests Gedatsu, Ohm, and Satori, the four locked in a grim contest over who can slay an intruder first.

Six years before the story opens, Enel razed the sky island of Birka and marched his God's Army into Skypiea, crushing Gan Fall's forces and seizing the Upper Yard. Posted there as a priest, Shura patrolled astride Fuza, his giant mount whose Flame Dial let it spit fire, and screened intruders with the Ordeal of String, a near-invisible web of cloud that snared its victims for the kill. When the Straw Hats slipped onto the island, he flew to the altar where the Going Merry sat and found only Chopper waiting; after toying with the ship he moved to finish the reindeer, but Gan Fall intervened and the two dueled across the sky. Reading his foes through Mantra, the sky-island form of Observation Haki, Shura snared Gan Fall in his strings and ran him through with the Heat Javelin, a spear superheated by a Dial to scorch whatever it touched. His luck turned during the Shandian assault: Wyper deliberately took a javelin strike to close the distance and shattered him with a Reject Dial, a blow he proved tough enough to survive even as it knocked him cold. He was thereby the first fighter eliminated in the survival game, and once Luffy toppled Enel, the Shandia rounded up the beaten priests and cast them out to Cloud Drifting.
