Sphinx

Towering close to a giant in scale, the Sphinx dwarfs others of its kind. A grim, humanlike visage sits atop a winged lion's body, and an old scar cuts across the area above its right eye.

Echoing the Manticores under its watch, the creature repeats overheard words without grasping their meaning, often blurting out Japanese noodle names. Intelligence is not its strength; it mistook Mr. 3's blank wax dummies for living people.

Brute force is the Sphinx's trade. A handful of its blows can pulverize an entire floor of the prison, dropping it through to the level beneath, and it shreds a Seastone-laced steel net without effort. It first blocked the stairway down when Mr. 3 stumbled into it; as Luffy, Buggy, and Mr. 3 broke from their cells toward Level 3, it tried to crush them.

Mr. 3 fed it an endless run of wax copies of himself to smash, and the resulting chaos collapsed the ground, plunging the beast and the trio into Starvation Hell. There a Seastone net snared them all until the Sphinx thrashed itself free, just as Saldeath arrived to claim the captured prisoners. The rampaging creature ended up flattening guards by accident before Luffy and Bon Kurei together finally put it down. It later picked up Buggy and Mr. 3's trail again after their flight from the Freezing Hell.
