Utan Divers

Character

The Utan Divers are the monkey-like undersea scouts who crew Shoujou's vessel within the Saruyama Alliance. Each carries a numbered designation, and together their razor-sharp hearing lets them chart currents, locate fish, and pinpoint enemy ships far across the water.

Appearance

Every diver shares the simian look of their captain Shoujou, an impression their gear only sharpens. The crew zips into face-and-ear-exposing wetsuits topped by antennae that can clip into one another mid-dive, and each suit is marked with the letters SJ to flag the wearer as one of Shoujou's pirates. Mittens cover their hands, while paired flasks ride on their hips, slung from chest harnesses.

Personality

Disciplined and clipped, the divers brief their captain in a terse military cadence and snap to attention when they report. Sharp ears do not translate into sharp wits, however. On one occasion the whole unit failed to register the Straw Hats' ship drawing near until it had practically reached them. Their devotion to Shoujou runs deep, and an insult aimed at him brings them rushing to his defense, even as he waves off the slight while quietly admitting it stung.

History

The divers signed on with the Shoujou Pirates and, after their captain joined the Saruyama Alliance, helped recover a bell-shaped gold ingot that was shown to Cricket. Their talent lies in undersea detection: working as a coordinated circle beneath the surface during the Search Sonar technique, they catch sound waves Shoujou broadcasts and read schools of fish, ship sizes, and current patterns. During the Jaya events they located a school of saurels and tracked the Going Merry, then guided the alliance toward the Knock Up Stream. Luffy thanked them with a Hercules beetle he caught in the forest, which they kept caged as a treasured pet. They later rejoiced when the ringing of the golden belfry confirmed that El Dorado was real, and years on they kept searching alongside Cricket and Masira for the dream island of Nakrowa, cheering when Vegapunk's broadcast spurred another expedition.
