Summary

A battered Zoro hauls the caged Luffy to a pet-food shop, where the mayor takes him inside to tend his wounds. Luffy meets Chouchou, a little dog guarding the store as a tribute to its late owner, Hocker. Nami turns up with the cage key, but Chouchou swallows it before Luffy can be freed.

Buggy dispatches his first mate Mohji, riding the lion Richie, to hunt down Zoro. Richie instead smashes Luffy's cage and torches the shop, beating Chouchou as the dog defends it. Enraged, Luffy thrashes both lion and tamer, then hands the dog one rescued box of food. Mohji limps back to report his loss, prompting Buggy to fire a cannon ball that flattens the mayor's house with Zoro inside. Zoro survives unhurt, and the mayor resolves to confront Buggy, with Nami agreeing to help.

Notes

This episode aired alongside the next two as a ninety-minute special and holds the record for the most chapters animated in one installment, covering Chapters 11 through 15 in full. It debuts Richie, Mohji, Chouchou, Boodle, and Hocker, plus Luffy's Gomu Gomu no Tsuchi attack. The eyecatchers belong to Luffy and Zoro, yet their themes play swapped over the wrong cards. Chouchou's backstory is told through the dog's memories rather than narrated, and the anime drops several manga details, including Boodle beating his own neck against Buggy's chokehold and a flashback bath shared with Hocker.
