Summary

Don Krieg is bitterly let down by Gin, the very man he had relied on above all others. He had valued the excess cruelty that made Gin unbeatable in combat, yet now Gin swears lasting respect for his captain while still refusing to kill Sanji, even asking that the Baratie be spared. The plea only enrages Krieg, and the rest of the crew is left baffled by their commander's sudden change.

Krieg readies his MH5 poison bomb. His pirates yank out protective masks, but he strips Gin of his rank and orders him to discard his own. The crew cannot believe he would execute someone so loyal, recalling how Gin once posed as captain and boarded a Marine vessel alone to shield Krieg, always throwing himself into danger and doing whatever it took to win, the conduct that earned him the name Demon.

Key Events

Luffy and Sanji try to convince Gin that a captain like Krieg is not worth dying for, but Gin views himself as a failure who betrayed his leader and deserves death, casting his mask aside on command. When Krieg fires the bomb, the Baratie cooks dive underwater and the Krieg crew shelters behind their masks. Thinking fast, Luffy snatches two masks and passes them to Sanji and Gin, only to find none left for himself, until one improbably drops at his feet. After the gas clears five minutes later, everyone survives except Gin, who is shown to have given his own mask to Luffy.
