Overview
The Power Core served as the driving energy source aboard the huge spaceship flown by the Dark Matter Thieves. It enters the manga in Chapter 32 and the anime in Episode 10, during the invasion that brings Boros and his crew to Earth.
Function
The core's job is to hold the giant ship hovering in the sky above A-City. Boros explains that no matter how much punishment the hull absorbs, the mothership will stay airborne so long as the core remains intact, which implies the vessel's levitation and every one of its systems draw from this single component. As such a supply, it can be assumed to churn out enormous quantities of energy.
