Shinaya

Character

Shinaya is a hapless young man drawn into the JCC entrance exam as one of its three special-recommendation candidates, Test Taker 208. What none of the applicants realize is that his body has been hijacked: the assassin Gaku pilots him by remote control, turning an ordinary debtor into a scouting weapon aimed at the exam's most promising recruits.

Appearance

Of unremarkable height and build, Shinaya has a mop of untidy brown hair, strong eyebrows, and a flat, unreadable stare from brown eyes usually hidden behind blue-lensed goggles. His outfit pairs a white button-up, its elbows patched with black and its red sleeves pushed up, with black electrical gloves on his hands. Below that he wears very loose navy trousers cinched by a black, gold-buckled belt, finished with dark boots.

Personality

For most of his appearance Shinaya barely speaks, since the man moving his body has no reason to make him talk. The real person surfaces only once the control is broken, and he collapses into frightened tears, begging to be allowed to go home. He turns out to be a timid, unremarkable soul with none of the menace his puppeteer projected.

History

Before any of this, Shinaya was simply a young man trying to clear his student debt, and he answered a deceptive job listing put out by Kashima that ended with Gaku seizing control of his body. Kashima chose him precisely because his physical potential was rare enough to survive being driven by Gaku's superhuman reflexes without tearing apart. Piloted this way he arrives among the special-recommendation applicants, then turns on the others, flooring Nao Toramaru and Shin Asakura, cutting down several examinees, and shrugging off every attempt by the staff to restrain him. He overpowers Shin, Toramaru, and Mafuyu Seba together, and even a coordinated push from Shin and Joichiro Kaji only briefly slows him before Gaku strains the borrowed limbs harder. Taro Sakamoto finally ends it, hammering the puppet through a wrecked plane and smashing the goggles that carried Gaku's signal. Freed at last, Shinaya wakes in tears and describes the deer-masked man and the white-haired stranger who had been hunting for recruits.
