Byodo

Byodo is an elderly, deeply wrinkled man of ordinary height, his beard and hair equally unkempt. He has only ever appeared in his janitor's coveralls, topped with a cap and a lanyard holding an ID card.

Byodo takes life at an easy pace, showing barely a flicker of alarm when Sakamoto turns up again at the JCC or when the veteran's presence throws the school into disorder. He likes to needle his grandson Amane, and grows lightly exasperated when the boy cuts class, usually answering with a small tap to the head. Though he never approved of Amane running with Slur's people, he kept offering the boy his support and an open invitation to visit or talk. Unlike his grandson, he holds little appetite for vengeance against his son-in-law for killing his daughter, keeping a measured distance from the whole matter.

Byodo has kept the JCC clean since the days when Sakamoto and Nagumo were students, and he raised Amane on the grounds from the age of seven. Age has not robbed him of strength; he managed to block an overhead blow from Club Jam, one of Slur's powerful assassins, though it left him lightly wounded. His defining trait is a memory beyond anything else in the series, so vast that he personally serves as the school's student database, holding records on 38,764 pupils in his head, a job normally left to machines. That same recall lets him rattle off the exact tally of every one of the 783 times he has bopped Amane on the head, and his perception runs keen enough that he alone saw straight through Sakamoto's disguise.
