Amazoness Quartet

The quartet is made up of four youthful girls, described in the Materials Collection artbook as sisters. CereCere takes the leader role, joined by PallaPalla, JunJun, and VesVes. For the television version their costumes were fitted with leggings for the sake of modesty, and the Korean broadcast went further by adding dark tops beneath the originals.

Every member draws her name from an asteroid rendered in kanji: the final character is dropped and what remains is doubled, which produces the paired syllables. The group label points back to the warrior women of Greek myth, while the Amazon Stones they carry echo amazonite, a mineral once gathered along the Amazon River.

What binds them together is a refusal to grow up. Each girl treasures her permanent childhood and dreads that maturing would erase her dreams, which is exactly why the Amazon Stones appeal to them. They are playful, cheeky, and quick to torment Zirconia, needling the old sorceress at every turn even though Nehelenia insists she tolerate them.

Beneath the villainy lies a secret: the four are really the Sailor Quartet, guardians fated to serve Sailor Chibi Moon, who lay dreaming in the Amazon jungle until Nehelenia found them and twisted them into her servants. Robbed of that destiny, they wield the Amazon Stones and carry a grudge against the Silver Millennium while answering, fearfully, to Zirconia.

In the manga the group is active from the moment the Dead Moon Circus arrives, and they realize at once that the Sailor Guardians have lost the power to transform. On Zirconia's orders they unleash the Amazon Trio against Mars, Mercury, and Jupiter, but each ambush only lets a guardian meet another version of herself and return stronger. When Sailor Saturn recognizes the corrupted guardians inside the Quartet and joins Chibi Moon in trying to reach them, their memories begin to stir, prompting Zirconia to seal them back into the stones. Once Nehelenia falls they are freed, revealed for who they truly are, and returned to sleep until Chibi Moon comes into her own. They surface again during the Stars arc to aid Sailor Moon and Sailor Kakyuu.

The anime tells it differently. The girls stumble on a dream mirror in the woods, hear Nehelenia through it, and accept the Amazon Stones in exchange for eternal youth. Assigned to hunt Pegasus by combing through dream mirrors, they clash repeatedly with the guardians and burn through a string of Lemures. In the end the Senshi persuade them that shattering their stones will not cost them their dreams, only their frozen childhood, and the Quartet smash the gems, cutting Nehelenia's hold and letting themselves age again. Freed, they repay Sailor Moon by swapping the Golden Crystal for a pineapple and slipping her the real gem, then depart without a goodbye, calling the silence their own kind of farewell.

Sailor Moon Crystal and the Eternal films retrace the manga arc in fuller detail, following the barrier that seals off Earth, the trials set for each guardian, and Saturn's rescue of the Amazon Stones so Neo-Queen Serenity can heal them. The stage musicals reinvent the group entirely as the Samael Quartet, homunculi grown in Professor Tomoe's laboratory from Chibiusa's stolen star seed, who shake off their conditioning through friendship and reclaim their true role. Across every telling they stand out as one of the only villain groups redeemed rather than destroyed.
