His coat is short and white, set off by bright blue eyes and a set of long whiskers. A gold crescent marks his brow, the same emblem Luna carries. Animators sometimes draw him a touch larger than his partner, though in plenty of scenes the two cats look about equally sized.

The show frames him as a somewhat idle, hopelessly lovestruck father figure hovering over Minako. He frequently lands in hot water with Luna, once getting exiled from her company after she caught him eyeing a nun, when he insists he was really admiring the church and daydreaming about a wedding there. The other guardians rib him for being bumbling and useless, a running gag pushed hardest in Artemis's Adventure: The Monster Animal Kingdom.

Even so, he throws himself into supporting Minako's ambitions, sneaking her notebooks and audition forms out of hiding and turning them in on her behalf. When she despairs over never finding love, he hands her flowers and proposes a date, which she takes him up on. One of his stranger quirks is silencing her alarm clock, cradling it, and hauling it into bed, which leaves Minako chronically tardy for school.

During the first series he debuts obliquely. His voice, run through a distortion filter, is heard in episode 8 as the mysterious informant Luna reached through an arcade Sailor V game, and his image first shows up on a poster around episode 21. He formally steps forward to present Minako as Sailor Venus, the final member to round out the team, and directs the group to gather at Hikawa Shrine. In an inconsistent thread, he is said to have sealed off Luna's recollections of Princess Serenity, memories that come flooding back the moment the princess awakens, after which he and Minako brief everyone on their Silver Millennium pasts. Luna is thoroughly annoyed when she later learns he was her secret source. As the season closes and the pair fear for Earth, he talks Luna out of a hopeless trip to the Arctic, partly because of her wounds, and afterward clings to the hope that the reborn cast will someday reunite.

In Sailor Moon R he and Luna fret over the new threat posed by Ail and An, insisting on reviving the other guardians even after Usagi awakens. He also squares off against a Droid to shield Luna, only to need rescuing by Sailor Moon. Come Sailor Moon S, he counsels a discouraged Minako, gifting her flowers and a date, and reassures the doubtful team that she is pure-hearted in her own fashion even as she deliberately baits the enemy. During SuperS he encounters Diana, his and Luna's daughter from Crystal Tokyo, to Luna's initial jealous confusion. In the Super S film he regrets letting a sick Luna head home alone and rallies the girls to track her down.
