Appearance

Esmeraude cuts a lavish figure with her lime-green hair and a wardrobe dripping in jewels. Her signature outfit is a dark green gown centered on three teal oval gems, matched by elbow-length gloves set with the same stones and by tall boots that echo the Guardians' own, minus their colored trim. An inverted black crescent marks her, as it does every member of the Black Moon Clan, and her earrings are cut from Malefic Black Crystal.

Wiseman's corrupted tiara pushes her through two further forms. First she briefly becomes Queen Esmeraude, robed in a long lavender gown with a dark purple bodice, oversized spiked shoulders, and a jeweled black crown. That regal shape soon collapses into a colossal dragon, its wingspan wide enough to shadow Crystal Tokyo and its landings heavy enough to shake the ground. The beast keeps sprawling wings, clawed limbs, and a long neck, its dark green body brightening to pale yellow underneath, a flash of pink atop its head, and the tiara's gem still lodged above its brow.

Personality

Vain and theatrical, Esmeraude carries a fierce love for Prince Demande, which curdles into jealousy once she realizes his heart belongs to Sailor Moon. That envy drives her to strike at Demande from the shadows so the enemy can slip away and stop distracting him. Her tastes run to baths and cake, and her braying laughter grated on others so badly that even Wiseman complained it left him with a headache.

History

She debuts one episode ahead of Rubeus's downfall, gleefully informing him that Demande means to cast him out over his failures, then coldly abandoning him to die aboard his exploding ship. Taking charge of the campaign, she plants a series of dark wedges around the Earth, supplied by Saphir, and looses droids to kill Sailor Moon and seize Chibiusa. Her tools include the Malefic Black Crystal earring, which hunts for Negative Points, a compact for contacting Demande, and the Dark Henges built by Saphir.

Consumed by jealousy, Esmeraude turns to Wiseman, who hands her a crown and assures her she is little different from Sailor Moon. Sensing a trap yet craving its power, she accepts and transforms into Queen Esmeraude, only for the true cost to overwhelm her and reduce her to a mindless creature. As a rampaging dragon, described by Mamoru as the physical shape of her buried thoughts, she wields flight and fiery breath, with the tiara's gem in her forehead as her sole weak point. The five Guardians battle the monster until Sailor Moon's Moon Princess Halation reverts it to Esmeraude, who then tumbles into a dark void to her apparent end. In her original form she favored a large razor-edged fan, hinting at skill in tessenjitsu, and the DiC dub renamed her Emerald. She stands as the second major Black Moon leader felled by the Guardians, after Rubeus.
