Gurio Umino

At fourteen, Umino carries a mop of pale, almost blond hair and is rarely out of his school uniform, though one early scene swaps it for casual clothes. What marks him on sight are the oversized lenses spiraled with swirl patterns that hide his eyes. The Guardians once pictured him looking dashing with the glasses gone, and creator Naoko Takeuchi later confirmed the handsome face underneath was real.

Book-smart to the point of earning top marks, Umino is also awkward, eccentric, and prone to materializing in odd places as if from nowhere. His real value to the group is information: he stockpiles trivia and rumor about the people around them, feeding Usagi and Naru background on classmates such as Mikan Shiratori and Higure Akiyama. That geeky curiosity keeps him hovering at the edge of nearly every school-day plot.

Early in the first season Umino nurses a one-sided crush on Usagi and even begs Naru for romantic advice, which she waves off with a laugh. When the youma Balm floods him and several schoolmates with dark energy, his affection curdles into aggression and he forces a kiss on Usagi before Sailor Moon frees him. Usagi later invites him on an outing, though only as cover for spying on Rei and Mamoru; Umino takes it for a genuine date.

His bond with Naru deepens after she credits him with heroics she attributes to a Tuxedo Mask impersonation, work actually done by the real Tuxedo Mask during a clash with Zoisite. By the second season the two are a settled couple, and in one episode they enter and win a contest of affection. His final outings reveal the exam pseudonym GuriGuri Hakasei, translated as Professor Squiggles, and a connection to Mercurius, alias Suri Kurume, before he bows out during Sailor Moon SuperS.
