Hina Kusaka

Hina stands at a fairly ordinary height and carries herself with an understated, everyday grace. Her hair falls long, straight, and black, framing a face that Usagi privately regards as strikingly lovely.

Kindness defines Hina more than anything else. She is gracious enough that Usagi, who sees her as a rival for Mamoru, cannot help admiring her generosity and finds it painful precisely because Hina is so easy to like. A nurturing streak runs through her as well, shown in the time she spends tutoring and in her care for a young boy who develops a crush on her, a small echo of the tangle of affection surrounding Mamoru himself.

The kanji in both her given and family names carry a solar meaning, a deliberate counterpoint to the lunar reading in Usagi's surname and the earthly one in Mamoru's. In the prologue chapter she keeps trying to reach Mamoru by phone and only ever gets Motoki, who reports that Mamoru has been swamped lately. She enters the story properly in Act 16, and her closeness to Mamoru devastates Usagi, though Hina, oblivious to those feelings at first, treats Usagi as a friend.

As time passes, Hina begins to fear that Mamoru stays at her side only out of an old childhood vow to marry her rather than real love, even while the two plan to move to London together. Watching how content Mamoru seems and how decent Hina is, Usagi sinks into despair. A Youma attack finally brings clarity: Hina recognizes that Mamoru's heart belongs to Usagi, calls off the engagement, and tears up her plane ticket once she grasps that she ranks only as someone important to him rather than the one he loves. When Mamoru insists she matters to him, she simply waves it away, says she already knows, and walks off masking her grief. She does not appear again in the main story.

A short follow-up minidrama catches up with her afterward, now working as an actress opposite a performer billed as Tuxedo Knight. A narrator notes she has fallen for a man she has yet to confess to, and the camera lingers as her gaze drifts toward Mamoru.
