Kenji Shinozaki

Kenji is a young student marked chiefly by his brown hair, with the anime offering no further detail about his looks.

Gentle and considerate, Kenji watches out for Makoto without asking anything in return, once sheltering her under an umbrella when she was hurting. She treasures him as a friend she calls closer than any lover, valuing the quiet comfort he steadily provides.

Kenji grew up alongside Makoto Kino. After a senpai rejected her and left her standing alone in the rain, he stayed to comfort her beneath an umbrella, though she made plain she saw him only as a dear friend. Makoto later transferred to Juuban Middle School yet is thought to have kept in touch with him.

During Ail and An's campaign, the Cardian Falion attacks him, and he shoves Makoto clear to save her, only to tumble from a cliff and take a grave head wound that leaves him bleeding badly and near death. Desperate to save him, Makoto offers her own blood at once, then tells the others about him. His plight hardens her determination to protect anyone from similar harm, even as blood loss weakens her. After Falion falls, she watches over him from a distance as he leaves the hospital, mirroring the quiet care he always gave her. He is presumed to recover and live on, though he has not appeared since. In the original English dub his name is shortened to Ken.
