Personality

Kenji is a diligent man who puts his family's happiness first, hoping his children stay on good terms and that the whole household stays content. His protective instincts run to an extreme, and the mere thought of Usagi seeing a boyfriend sends him into a panic that has even boiled over into fits of road rage. That temper aside, he shows real courage when it counts, having stepped in to shield his children on more than one occasion. Whatever his mood, he stays committed to guarding them and to seeing them succeed.

History

His debut comes in the second episode, when Ikuko sends him out to run errands; along the way he meets Usagi coming home from school and asks about the cat trailing behind her, and she explains that Luna is simply a friend. The next episode finds him reading a newspaper report on the strange sleeping sickness spreading through the city. In episode nine he falls under Jadeite's cursed clocks and dashes out the door late for work while Ami is visiting.

A larger role arrives in episode twenty-two, when his job takes him to a reception hosted by the Kingdom of D. There he spots a disguised Usagi without realizing who she is, wishing his own daughter might grow up half as lovely. He photographs a possessed Princess D but loses the shots during her rampage, then later captures images of her treasure, a diamond of several karats. He turns up again in episode forty-five for Usagi's disastrous attempt at making curry, and closes out the first season in episode forty-six, gazing anxiously out at Tokyo as a blackout ripples across the city.

The second season brings him to a new virtual theater with Shingo in episode fifty, where he is hurt shielding both children before Ikuko nurses him back to health. His final scene in the entire 1990s run lands in episode sixty-six, as Chibiusa grows upset that neither parent can join her class party to cook curry. Elsewhere he is noted attending a ball for his magazine and failing to recognize a disguised Usagi thanks to the Disguise Pen, and he tends to stay cool toward Mamoru out of fatherly overprotectiveness even after Ikuko warms to the young man.
