Maenads

The two priestesses are near-mirror images of one another, both washed in a pale, delicate palette. Their hair falls long, white, and wavy, echoing Usagi's own arrangement but for a broader, more billowing fringe. Floor-length togas of white drape each girl, gathered at the midsection by a lilac binding shaped like a cross. Beadlike eyes of soft lilac, faint pink lips, teardrop earrings, and a matching gem-set circlet round out their twin look.

Gentle and mild, the Maenads carry themselves with quiet courtesy as they keep watch over the shrine. That calm demeanor clashes sharply with their namesakes in Greek myth, the wine-god Dionysus's wild female devotees, whose raving nature is the opposite of theirs. The mismatch was enough that later English releases of the manga floated other possible roots for the name in their notes.

Long before the Dead Moon Circus reached Earth to launch the Dream arc, the troupe had already seized Elysion, taking Helios prisoner, warping him into a pegasus, and laying a curse over the whole realm. Only the two priestesses endured, kept safe inside the sleep of Elysion's purifying crystals, much as Neo-Queen Serenity had once done to spare Crystal Tokyo from the Black Moon Clan. Usagi and Mamoru come upon them in this slumber during their first visit, before climbing to the surface to confront Zirconia.

Once Helios spent those crystals to shield the guardians and fell, the sleepers woke; they gave their names, guided Sailor Chibi Moon and her companions into the shrine, and later cried out in dread as Queen Nehelenia bore down for the closing battle. They stayed out of sight through every attack and curse, emerging untouched. Once Nehelenia was beaten, the pair took their place beside Helios and bowed during the crowning of King Endymion and Neo-Queen Serenity. They stayed on in Elysion after the lifting of the curse.
