Naru Osaka

Wavy hair that stops just short of her shoulders is her signature, colored orange in most scenes though it drifts toward reddish-brown in certain episodes, usually accented by a deep teal bow. Her eyes are teal rather than the blue of her manga self. In casual clothes she is often seen in an orange top, a teal skirt, and sea-green tights over black Mary Jane shoes, while her school days pair the uniform with white socks and the same black shoes.

Warm and fiercely loyal, Naru stands by the people she loves without hesitation, whether shielding Nephrite from harm or defending Umino when others mock him. She can also be tactful about other people's secrets, once telling Usagi plainly that everyone has things they cannot discuss and leaving the matter alone.

Her judgment is not flawless. She initially looks down on Umino for being awkward and nerdy, only to warm to him completely with time and later leap to his defense whenever Usagi teases him, insisting he is a wonderful person.

From the earliest episodes Naru is a magnet for danger, forever caught in the Dark Kingdom's schemes and the various monsters of the week. The pattern begins in episode one, when Jadeite's Morga imprisons her mother, takes her place, and laces the family's OSA-P jewelry with dark energy to drain human vitality. Morga eventually turns on Naru directly, and Sailor Moon reaches her just in time.

Her defining arc unfolds around Nephrite. As he carries out the Dark Kingdom's designs on Earth, the two cross paths repeatedly, and Naru falls for him. He comes to regret his cruelty, returns her feelings, and is protected by her even as Sailor Moon moves to finish him with the Moon Tiara. Zoisite reads the bond as treason and unleashes monsters to kill him. Despite Naru's efforts to save him, Nephrite dies in her arms, shielding her to the last. Grief-stricken, she stays out of school for over a week. Usagi coaxes her back and gently steers Umino toward her; Naru resists at first but is won over, warming to him after his heroics while posing as Tuxedo Mask.

By Sailor Moon R, Umino has officially become her boyfriend and her role shrinks during the Black Moon storyline, with strong hints near its close that she has pieced together Sailor Moon's identity. A Cherry Blossom Festival picnic marks the first time she spends the day with the whole Guardian team. The S season strains her relationship with Umino as each suspects the other of hiding something, until a couples' contest patches things up; his heartfelt speech wins the day, but the heart-shaped monument they touch has been seeded with a Daimon Egg, and the resulting Daimon rips out Umino's Pure Heart before the Guardians intervene. Her SuperS appearance is a single outing in which Tiger's Eye hunts her Dream Mirror as bait for Pegasus, and she also turns up alongside Umino in the SuperS special Ami's First Love. As the cast grew, the other Guardians steadily took over her old place as Usagi's core circle, and she had vanished entirely by the Stars season.
