Old Chess Man

With his wild grey hair, a bushy mustache, and thick eyebrows to match, the old man bears a passing likeness to Albert Einstein. He is generally seen in a brown suit.

He comes across as a warm, perceptive man who plainly delights in chess, above all in his matches against Ami. Attentive to those around him, he notices how much steadier and less withdrawn she has grown, crediting the shift to the friends she has made. His trust in her runs deep enough that he thinks nothing of letting her roam his Chess Tower unsupervised.

The man had long been a chess partner of Ami's grandfather, and once she was old enough he began playing against her too, sensing that the game helped pull her out of her loneliness. Before his on-screen debut he had already drafted the plans for the Chess Tower and had it constructed. During the episode he remarks on how her play has sharpened and her spirits have lifted, though she cuts their match short after spotting Berthier nearby and slips off to investigate. Later he looks on as Ami faces Berthier across the board.
