Sailor Princesses

A Princess Form swaps the fighting uniform for a floor-length gown cut and colored to the individual, worn with a matching choker, necklace, and heels, and marked by that world's symbol on the brow. Serenity's white gown, trimmed in lace and pearls, sets the template.

Her guardians follow their elemental palettes: blue for Mercury, red for Mars, green for Jupiter, and yellow for Venus, with deeper blues, teal, black, and violet for Uranus, Neptune, Pluto, and Saturn. Chibiusa's pink, ruffled dress often mirrors her mother's, while beyond the Solar System, Princess Kakyuu of Kinmoku wears a red-orange dress and a blue flower at her throat.

The title carries duty as much as rank. During the Silver Millennium each Princess received a castle as a gift from Queen Serenity and answered to the Moon Kingdom's crown, taking on assigned charges. The four inner Senshi served as Princess Serenity's bodyguards and close friends, with Venus at their head.

The outer Princesses stood apart at their posts. Pluto watched over the Door of Space and Time, while Uranus and Neptune guarded the Solar System's borders from their own worlds. Saturn's role was grimmer still, waking only in times of catastrophe to level a doomed realm so that rebirth could follow.

Sailor Moon's identity as the reborn Princess Serenity anchors the manga's first arc; she takes the form when her past memories stir and the Silver Crystal is unsealed. In the ancient Silver Millennium, Serenity was no Senshi at all, living purely as a Princess under her guardians' care, and both she and her future daughter, Small Lady Serenity of the Crystal Palace, gain their magic only once their Sailor Crystals awaken. Their mothers, Queen Serenity and Neo-Queen Serenity, wield great power without ever taking a Senshi shape, yet still turn back threats like Queen Metalia, Death Phantom, and Queen Nehelenia.

In the manga and Crystal, the inner and outer Senshi are themselves Solar Sailor Princesses, most learning it when their Sailor Power Guardians appear and ask them to feed their castles' power into the Holy Moon Chalice during the fight with Nehelenia; Minako had already discovered her Venusian royalty back in Codename: Sailor V. The first anime keeps things narrower, showing only the two Moon Serenitys on screen, though the Sailor Moon S closing credits briefly reveal the other Senshi in Greek-styled, mostly-white gowns beside Serenity.

Each holds her own protectors. Chibiusa keeps the Sailor Quartet, while Kakyuu, princess and Guardian of Kinmoku, is shielded by her three Sailor Starlights until Galaxia destroys her world.
