His hair is a deep shade of blue, and he favors a military-cut jacket in matching blue tones, paired with blue gloves, white trousers, and shoes of a soft violet. When that jacket comes off, an undershirt in pale lilac shows through, styled with a mandarin-collar closure reminiscent of a Chinese button top, a detail visible both before and after Wiseman strikes him down.

Alone among the Black Moon Clan, Saphir refuses to take the field against the Sailor Guardians, limiting himself to carrying out Demande's instructions as his counselor. At heart he still believes in the clan's founding dream, a peaceful return to Earth, the very goal that Wiseman twisted. His manner is calm and gentle, so much so that on reaching modern Tokyo and collapsing, his first thought is how lovely the planet looks.

He distrusts Wiseman, whose steady stream of lies to Demande he cannot stomach, and he finds an ally in Esmeraude, who shares that suspicion. Devotion to his brother never stops him from pushing back when he must. His lone grudge beyond Wiseman is toward Sailor Moon, whom he first reads as a distraction pulling at Demande's heart, an opinion he abandons once he accepts that she was right about Earth all along.

Throughout Sailor Moon R, Saphir never once trades blows with the Guardians, keeping strictly to his brother's commands. The dark crystal that powers the clan answers to his expertise, and he raises or lowers its output as Demande directs. Growing ever more wary, he keeps a silent eye on Wiseman and comes to realize the sorcerer is merely exploiting Demande, meaning to discard him once he is no longer useful. Slipping into a hidden chamber, Saphir seizes a dark microchip to sap the palace's strength, but Wiseman catches him and threatens him with the Death Phantom's fury. Saphir breaks free and flees, gravely wounded.

He escapes into the past, where Petz and her sisters have settled. His reunion with Petz, the woman he loves, comes with a vow to come back once he has cautioned his brother. On the return trip Black Lady blocks his path and demands that he abandon Demande. Tuxedo Mask's arrival buys him a chance to deliver his warning, yet even with the Guardians trying to shield him, Wiseman cuts him down with a pair of energy blasts. The dressing Petz had wrapped around his head slips away to reveal a forehead bare of any dark crescent, confirming that he had truly crossed to the side of good. Watching him fall leaves Demande shattered and finally doubting Wiseman's aims.
