Yuichiro Kumada

Yuichiro keeps his brown hair at shoulder length in a shaggy cut, with a heavy fringe swept across his right eye so it stays hidden, and his eyes are black. On shrine duty he wears a white kimono top, pale blue hakama, and white sandals. His street clothes shift over time, from a light denim jacket and turtleneck to a darker jacket with a yellow shirt, and for one formal visit he turns up in a gray suit.

His default mode is easygoing, sometimes clumsy or slow to grasp what is really happening, though rarely through any fault of his own. Underneath sits genuine resolve: he takes the lead for people in need and has risked his life for Rei more than once. He also runs jealous, bristling when he mistakes Haruka for a man flirting with her, yet he can be thoughtful too, once soothing Rei by suggesting her grandfather's strange mood had a hidden cause. Gullible and easily talked into things, he stays good-natured and hopeful and seldom loses his temper.

He first turns up in episode 30, dozing on the shrine steps, and the moment he sees Rei he is smitten. He pleads with her grandfather to take him on as an apprentice and throws himself into the grueling Shinto training that follows. In episode 38, a ski trip reveals that Yuichiro actually comes from wealth; he offers the group his family's nearby home while his parents holiday in Switzerland, explaining that he chose shrine work to better himself. During that outing he is knocked out shielding Rei from a youma, and she, after calling him useless, quietly kisses his cheek. Sailor Moon S puts him through heartbreak in episode 99, where, convinced Rei is seeing Haruka, whom he takes for a man, he challenges Haruka to a duel, is brushed off, and resolves to leave Tokyo, only for Kaolinite to rip out his Pure Heart Crystal at the train station before Rei brings him home. His final anime turn comes in SuperS, where he grows jealous of Mamoru staying at the shrine; after Rei is targeted by Tiger's Eye he offers her a grudging apology. A later episode notes only that he has gone off on vacation while Rei covers his chores.
