Umino's Resolve: I'll Protect Naru

Prompted by a message on her console that the five guardians are nearly assembled, Luna decides the time has come to share what she knows. She summons the girls to Hikawa Shrine in the dead of night and explains their forgotten past: a kingdom once stood on the moon, and the princess they have been searching for was its ruler. The revelation strains belief until Ami declares that Luna's word settles it.

At school, Usagi tells the lovestruck Umino that if he wants to impress Naru he should aim to be as cool as Tuxedo Mask. Umino embraces the idea completely, adopting a clumsy caped alter ego he dubs Tuxedo Umino Mask and shadowing Naru with a toy hammer and heaps of misplaced heroics.

Motoki hands Usagi a pair of tickets to a Redman stage show at an amusement park, calling himself too old for it. Usagi passes them to Naru and Umino as a chance for the pair to spend time together. In the Dark Kingdom, Zoisite alters the Black Crystal so it can turn ordinary people into monsters and heads to Naru's home to transform her and bait Sailor Moon, but the sight of Umino in his costume makes him fear the real Tuxedo Mask is near, and he retreats.

At the show, Zoisite aims the Black Crystal at Naru, yet she bends down for a dropped purse and the beam strikes the Redman actor instead, spawning a monster that traps the crowd in balls of moss. Tuxedo Umino Mask flings fried shrimp at the creature and is swatted aside. Usagi becomes Sailor Moon; Naru is caught while trying to shield Umino. Zoisite demands the Rainbow Crystal and warns that everyone will die otherwise, so Sailor Moon reluctantly hands it over, only for Tuxedo Mask to knock it loose. Sailor Moon strikes the monster with Moon Tiara Action and cleanses the victim with Moon Healing Escalation, releasing the captives. Zoisite snatches the fallen crystal and vanishes, while Tuxedo Mask vows to keep the one he holds for himself.

This is a milestone chapter that confirms the lost princess came from the moon, names the Moon Kingdom, and establishes that five guardians exist in all, setting up the arrival of Sailor Venus. It is also where Zoisite reworks the Black Crystal into a tool for creating monsters beyond the Seven Great Youma, and where Sailor Moon surrenders one of her Rainbow Crystals to him. None of these events appear in the manga, where Luna discloses the Moon Kingdom at a different point. The DiC dub retitled the episode Tuxedo Melvin and rebranded the Redman sentai program as a generic wrestling act.
