Summary

A morning jog brings Usagi and Mamoru together, but the mood shifts when they find a downcast Chibiusa on a playground swing, missing her parents. As Mamoru offers to walk her home, a touch of her hand triggers a vision of a crystal city. Bickering follows over how tightly Chibiusa clings to him, and once they reach the Tsukino house the family fusses over the girl before realizing they have never met Mamoru. Chibiusa, hungry and forgotten, uses Luna-P to hypnotize the household, and Luna bites Usagi to snap her free.

Elsewhere, Berthier reports to Rubeus that even without finding the Rabbit they can corrupt the Crystal Points to keep Crystal Tokyo from ever rising. Mamoru, meanwhile, is struck by a fuller vision of the crystal city and Princess Serenity amid destruction. When Usagi runs to embrace him, he pushes her back and declares that he no longer loves her and their relationship is over.

Key Events

Usagi seeks comfort from the other girls at Hikawa Shrine, then goes to Mamoru's apartment to apologize, only to hear him repeat that it is finished. Crushed, she collapses in tears inside a phone booth. Berthier seizes the shop Otafukuya, installs her Droid Atsugessho to peddle special cosmetics, and scatters flyers across the city, one of which drifts to Usagi.

Hoping makeup might win Mamoru back, Usagi enters the store and clashes with the clerk, who drops her disguise as the Droid. Luna's attack buys Usagi the chance to become Sailor Moon. The Droid spits a stream of melting liquid, but Tuxedo Mask arrives, deflects its attack with his cane, and distracts it long enough for Sailor Moon to finish it with Moon Princess Halation. As he departs, Sailor Moon insists he still cares because he came to save her; he answers that he cannot love a weak girl and walks on, silently apologizing. She vows to grow stronger and reclaim his heart.

Notes

Following the previous episode's first look at Crystal Tokyo, this chapter is where the future city is first named aloud, and it introduces the Crystal Point locations and the Droid enemies. In the manga Mamoru never ends the relationship and never suffers visions of Serenity amid ruin, and Chibiusa hypnotizes Usagi's family only once. The DiC dub, retitled The Cosmetic Caper, trimmed a street scene and muted the sounds of the shop's real employees being attacked offscreen.
