Golden Crystal

Rivaling the Silver Crystal in both might and importance, the Golden Crystal serves as the treasure of the planet Earth. It sits at the heart of two major storylines, driving the plot of Sailor Moon SuperS in the anime and the Dream saga within the manga. Although the object is the same in name, its source and the way it comes into play were reimagined between the two continuities.

Its power is bound entirely to the hopes and dreams of ordinary people. When many hearts fail to reach their dreams, the gem grows faint and eventually spent, and it burns at full brilliance only when good hearts unite and keep on dreaming. Fittingly, it traces back to the golden realm of Elysion, the dream world it draws its light from.

In the manga, the crystal is Mamoru Chiba's own Sailor Crystal, the wellspring that lets him become Tuxedo Mask even while he remains ignorant of it. As Prince Endymion he once wielded it to guard the Golden Kingdom of Elysion. Sealed away inside him, it can only be unlocked by Eternal Sailor Moon, and once freed it joins forces with the Silver Crystal to restore Elysion and raise the couple as King Endymion and Neo-Queen Serenity, afterward set into Endymion's staff.

The 90s anime instead shapes it like a diamond and rests it upon the brow of Helios, guardian and high priest of the dream realm. It pours out brilliant golden light that boosts the abilities of others, granting Super Sailor Moon the Moon Kaleido Scope and Super Sailor Chibi Moon the Crystal Carillon, and it once held the Amazon Trio in their human-like shapes. The gem also renders its bearer nearly untouchable by attacks. It behaves as a conscious, willful artifact with feelings of its own, surrendering its full strength only to a kind heart full of beautiful dreams.

Mamoru Chiba carries the crystal within himself throughout the manga, its energy reinforcing the Silver Crystal each time Tuxedo Mask lends Sailor Moon fresh courage in the cursed land of Elysion. In the anime, Helios shelters it from Queen Nehelenia by fleeing his body as Pegasus, but once he is reunited with his human form she seizes it and turns its dream power against the five Super Sailor Guardians.

The Amazoness Quartet later steal it back and hand it to Super Sailor Moon, who joins with Super Sailor Chibi Moon and the dreams of Earth's people to seal Nehelenia within the new moon. Helios then returns the gem to Elysion as its keeper. Near the season's close, when Sailor Galaxia claims Mamoru's Star Seed and it shines gold, the moment hints that his seed is the Golden Crystal itself, mirroring how Usagi's is the Silver Crystal.
