Pure Heart Crystal

Pure Heart Crystals are objects central to the Sailor Moon S storyline, coveted at once by Sailor Uranus, Sailor Neptune, and the Death Busters. In the animated telling they fill the role that a person's soul held in the original manga, appearing as tiny pink crystalline shapes that stand in for the essence of someone's heart. Nearly every human's crystal looks the same, with Usagi's being the notable exception.

A trio of these crystals each hide a Talisman within, which is why both the Outer Guardians and the Death Busters chase them so fiercely. A crystal's brilliance shifts according to how sincere and pure its owner is, and the gems are delicate enough to be damaged easily. When one is pulled from a person, that individual typically faints or grows very weak, and a permanent loss proves fatal; even a lengthy separation can kill. Someone left alive without their crystal turns impure. This danger is exactly what troubled Uranus and Neptune, since claiming a Talisman appeared to mean destroying its host.

No single character owns the Pure Heart Crystals; they are drawn from ordinary people who fall prey to the Death Busters. The three that carry Talismans belong to specific individuals hunted by both sides. In shape the crystals faintly echo Sailor Saturn's brooch, which resembles a Moravian star.
