Overview

Sailor Crystals are a particular class of Star Seed that every Sailor Guardian carries within her. The name plays on the way real crystals form: a tiny seed sparks the process, and from that small beginning a much larger crystal takes shape. In the same spirit, immature Sailor Crystals are simply called seeds until they mature.

Function

Every Sailor Crystal begins in the Galaxy Cauldron, the source of all Star Seeds. As new stars come into being, special seeds are dispatched to grow alongside them and eventually ripen into the crystals that form the core of the guardians who watch over those worlds. Each crystal holds everything that defines a guardian, serving as the fountain of her power, and it is bound up with her Sailor Power Guardian. Most Senshi keep their crystals tucked inside their transformation brooches, though the stones can lie sealed until their owner fully awakens; the Solar System guardians can also summon them directly to transform, as with the call Venus Crystal Power, Make Up. Because all living things are already born carrying a Star Seed, these guardians hold an ordinary human seed in addition to their Sailor Crystal.

In appearance, the crystals of the Inner and Outer Planet guardians take a heart shape, while those of Sailor Moon and Sailor Chibi Moon usually resemble teardrops that can unfold into lotus forms; every crystal shows a distinct color. When Shadow Galactica forcibly rips them away, they harden into colored octahedrons like plain Star Seeds, the sole holdout being Usagi's Silver Crystal, which keeps its lotus shape in the 1990s anime. Sailor Galaxia gathers crystals from across the galaxy, obliterating her victims and leaving only the crystals behind to be hoarded at Sagittarius Zero Star. In the older anime these are instead termed true star seeds, the everlasting seeds unique to guardians that Galaxia and her Animamates pursue.
