Transformation Pen

Mercury, Mars, Jupiter, and Venus each begin their careers relying on one of these pens, making them the first magical devices the inner quartet ever wields. A pen matches its owner: the cap bears her planetary emblem and is tinted in her personal shade, deep blue for Mercury, deep red for Mars, dark green for Jupiter, and a vivid orange for Venus. In every version the tool serves the same single purpose, granting access to the standard Sailor form rather than any advanced state.

To activate a change, the Guardian calls out her planetary phrase, such as Mercury Power, Make Up, and the crest mounted on the cap breaks free to trigger the sequence. The pens carry no offensive value; their entire job is unlocking the transformation. Because they represent an early tier of power, they are eventually retired in favor of the sturdier Star Power Sticks. In the manga the four are willingly given up when the Guardians pour everything they have into rousing Sailor Moon, who lies trapped inside Metalia. The Crystal continuity destroys them in a similar sacrifice, as the team channels their combined strength against Queen Metalia, after which the Sticks arrive in the fifteenth episode.

The pens belong strictly to the Inner Guardians. In the anime, Luna hands the tools to Ami, Rei, and Makoto, while Artemis quietly delivers Minako's off screen. The manga adds a small character note, showing Ami treat her pen as an ordinary writing instrument before she learns its true nature. Crystal reshuffles the origins again: Ami earns hers as a prize in the Sailor V arcade game, Usagi jostles a machine to receive one, and Minako's item stands apart from the rest, styled like a capped pencil topped with a star.
