Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Eternal

This theatrical pair belongs to the Sailor Moon Crystal line and brings the manga's Dream storyline to the screen. The narrative resumes right after the third Crystal season and later gives way to the Cosmos films. Toei Animation and Studio Deen produced the movies, Chiaki Kon directed, and Kazuyuki Fudeyasu wrote the screenplay under Naoko Takeuchi's supervision. Part one and part two reached Japanese theaters in early 2021 following a pandemic driven delay, and Netflix later streamed both worldwide.

A solar eclipse brings a vision of a pegasus who begs Usagi, Chibiusa, Mamoru, and the cat Diana for aid, and moments later the Dead Moon Circus stakes its claim on Juban. Chibiusa learns the horse is Helios, a priest of the sacred realm Elysion, who hands her a bell and asks her to help recover the Golden Crystal. Behind the circus stand the crone Zirconia, her four servants the Amazoness Quartet, and the vain Queen Nehellenia, all scheming from within a mirror to seize the Silver Crystal.

Each Inner Guardian is stalked in turn. The Amazon Trio of Fish Eye, Tiger's Eye, and Hawk's Eye prey on the private fears of Ami, Rei, and Makoto, while Minako is lured into a rigged idol contest. One by one the women face their nightmares, receive their planetary crystals and upgraded weapons, and rise into their Super forms. Meanwhile Mamoru grows gravely ill from a black rose lodged in his chest, the mark of Nehellenia's curse spreading out of Elysion.

Hotaru, raised in secret by the Outer Guardians, matures rapidly and awakens as Sailor Saturn, restoring Haruka, Michiru, and Setsuna's power so they can join the fight. The heroines press into Nehellenia's mirror world and her poisoned Elysion, where Usagi and Mamoru recover the memory of the ancient Golden Kingdom. In the climax the united Guardians lend their strength to Usagi, raising her at last into Eternal Sailor Moon, whose Starlight Honeymoon Therapy Kiss finishes Nehellenia. With the curse lifted, Helios revives, the Amazoness Quartet are freed as the sleeping Sailor Quartet, and Usagi and Mamoru are crowned as their future royal selves.

Production of a fourth Crystal season as a two part film was announced in 2017, and the project weathered a title change and a release postponement caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Yasuharu Takanashi supplied most of the score, and the idol group Momoiro Clover Z, joined by the voice actresses of Usagi and the Inner Guardians, performed the headline theme Moon Color Chainon. Two additional closing songs revived ending themes from the 1990s SuperS anime. Both parts opened in Japan in January and February 2021 and arrived on Netflix internationally that June.
